Newport News Teacher, Abby Zwerner, Speaks Out in NBC News Interview

January 6, 2023, is a date that many in Hampton Roads will always remember including Abby Zwerner.

Zwerner was shot by a six-year-old student that day. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew confirmed the bullet went through her hand, into her chest. As a result, Zwerner says she has undergone four surgeries so far. In an interview with NBC's Savannah Guthrie, she recalls the moments leading up to the shooting, “That’s something that I will never forget. It’s changed me. It’s changed my life.”

“For going through what I’ve gone through, I try to stay positive. You know, try to have a positive outlook on what’s happened and where my future’s heading." Although she is staying positive she also admits some days she can't get out of bed and other days she's able to get up and make it to her appointment.
