Cancel culture strikes again and for good reason!
On a day where we would typically celebrate the life of Dr. Seuss, we are cancelling his books. Today is Read Across America day and typically a day that we'd include Dr. Seuss in our booklist, but President Biden has officially nixed Dr. Seuss from the annual holiday.
Six Dr. Seuss books have halted publishing after racist and hurtful imagery was found on the covers and within the books. The six books include:
- And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street
- If I Ran the Zoo
- McElligot's Pool
- On Beyond Zebra
- Scrambled Eggs Super!
- The Cat's Quizzer
In one book, And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, an Asian person is seen wearing a conical hat, holding chopsticks, and eating from a bowl. In his book If I Ran the Zoo, there are two African American men seen bare-footed and wearing grass skirts with their hair tied above their head.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises made the decision to halt the production of these books early last year and President Biden even removed mention of Dr. Seuss from Read Across America Day.
This is not the first book by Dr. Seuss that has been cancelled and the popular book The Cat in the Hat has gotten some significant criticism too but will continue to be published...for now.
