'Joker' Movie Broke Several Records Over The Weekend

Though it's been plagued by controversy in the months leading up to its release, Todd PhillipsJoker movie had a record-breaking debut.

The most reported accomplishment was that it beat Venom for the biggest October opening of all time with $250 million globally.

Turns out, Joker broke many more records in the last several days, including:

  • Biggest Imax October Opening: The movie earned around $9 million in ticket sales from these screenings alone.
  • Career-Best Start for Todd Phillips: He surpassed his previously biggest opening from 2011’s The Hangover Part II, which made almost $86 million.
  • Career-Best Start for Joaquin Phoenix: His previous biggest domestic debut was in M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs in 2002, which made a little over $60 million.
  • Career-Best Start for Co-Star Robert De Niro: His previous biggest debut was in 2004’s Meet The Fockers, which earned around $46 million.
  • Fourth-Best Weekend Opening for an R-Rated Pic in the U.S: Topping the list is Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and IT: Chapter 1.
  • Warner Bros.' Biggest Domestic Opening in Two Years: The last time Warner Bros made this much was when IT debuted to over $120 million in 2017.
  • Widest October Release of All Time in North America: Joker opened to 4,374, compared to Venom’s 4,350-location release.
