Chernobyl Becomes Tourist Hot Spot After HBO Miniseries

Chernobyl has long been known as the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986, but now thanks to HBO, it's becoming one of the most popular spots for tourists.

The Chernobyl miniseries has received a ton of praise from both critics and viewers, and has renewed people's interest in the site and its history.

Adventurous tourists have visited the deserted, decaying city around the nuclear power station in Pripyat, Ukraine for years - and now, the site is experiencing a sudden surge in numbers.

“We have seen a 35% rise in bookings,” said Victor Korol, director of the SoloEast tour company, which has been offering trips to Chernobyl for 20 years.

“Most of the people say they decided to book after seeing this show. It’s almost as though they watch it and then jump on a plane over.”

Chernobyl is one of the most polluted places in the world and can only be visited with a licensed guide. The Chernobyl clean-up operation is still in progress 33 years later.
