What was supposed to be a great weekend in Atlanta watching and performing at the Super Bowl turned into something different for 21 Savage (aka Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph ). This as he was arrested early yesterday morning by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. You heard that right...not guns, not drugs, not accusations of a violent crime. Immigration.
Turns out, he was swept up in a "targeted operation" in Atlanta - and according to ICE, he is in the United States illegally. They say he entered the US legally in July 2005, when he was a minor. And that's where it's wild. Until now, he was believed to have been born and raised in Atlanta. But according to ICE, he's a British citizen who failed to leave the country when his visa expired in July 2006. As an ICE spokesman tells CNN, "His whole public persona is false."
While that remains to be see, we do know that Savage was in Atlanta over the weekend for the Super Bowl, even performing during the Bud Light Super Bowl Music Fest just days before his arrest. He's nominated for two awards at the GRAMMYs, which will take place next week. For the moment, however, he remains in federal custody.
