Jamie Lee Curtis is opening up about her experience with addiction. In a new interview, she reveals that she had an opioid addiction that she kept secret for years. She explains that addiction developed after she was prescribed painkillers while recovering from a minor plastic surgery procedure back in 1989.
Once she was hooked, she would steal pills from even her family and friends… which is also how she was finally figured out. Her secret was revealed in 1998 after her sister Kelly caught her stealing pills from her. That February, she attended her first recovery meeting. Now, she regularly attends meetings and has been sober for 10 years.
“I’m breaking the cycle that has basically destroyed the lives of generations in my family,” she adds, explaining that addiction runs in her family and led to her brother Nicholas’ death by overdose. “Getting sober remains my simple greatest accomplishment… bigger than my husband, bigger than both of my children and bigger than any work, success, failure.”
