WATCH: How To Talk To Kids About The VA Beach Tragedy

As everyone in Hampton Roads is grieving over the lives lost in Friday's mass shooting in Virginia Beach, many people are wondering how to speak to their children about it in a way that's easy to understand.

The Executive Director of Counseling at Old Dominion University gave some tips about what to say if your children ask questions.

It's okay if you don't want to talk about it, but if they bring it up, you need to be able to reassure them.

There's also a chance that some children (and teens) may not handle things as well as others. You may need to seek professional help for your child if they are:

  • Losing sleep
  • Having nightmares over it
  • Showing signs of excessive worry or anxiety

Several local organizations are offering free crisis counseling following Friday’s tragedy. Click here for a list.
