Scripps National Spelling Bee Ends In 8-Way Tie

The Scripps National Spelling Bee had an insane ending last night, when EIGHT of the kids were crowned as "co-champions"!

All eight of the kids went through the final 5 rounds without misspelling a single word, so the judges ended up getting through all 47 of the words they had!

Dr.Jacques Bailly said they "threw the dictionary” at the champions, but all eight “showed the dictionary who was boss.”

This is the first time in the event's 92-year history that a group of people have shared the champion title.

The new co-champions are Rishik Gandhasri, Erin Howard, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Christopher Serrao and Rohan Raja.

As for the cash prize, the Spelling Bee organizers had originally planned to split the first- and second-place money in the event of a tie, but because of this historic situation, EACH speller was given the full $50,000 cash prize, in addition to a Scripps Cup.
