James Gunn's 'Suicide Squad' Movie Will Be A Reboot

James Gunn was tapped to write and direct the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise recently (before he was also rehired by Disney to do Guardians of the Galaxy 3). Well, it turns out it’s NOT going be Suicide Squad 2 – it’s actually a reboot, and it'll be called The Suicide Squad.

That explains why Will Smith won't be returning for the project, and Idris Elba was announced a few weeks ago as his replacement for the role of Deadshot.

So far, the rest of the cast of The Suicide Squad hasn’t been revealed – and producer Peter Safran, who also produced Aquaman, is calling it a “total reboot.” So, as of now, it's unclear if viewers should expect any of the original film’s cast (like Jared Leto and Margot Robbie) to return or not.

Either way, Safran says fans should get excited, and that the movie’s in good hands.

“It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script,” he adds. “I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot.”
