Melissa McCarthy Discusses Fat-Shaming

Being a beloved actress doesn’t shield you from idiots. Just ask Melissa McCarthy. The actress, who’s featured in InStyle’s second annual Badass Women’s issue, recalled a time when a male movie critic fat-shamed her.

While doing press for “Bridesmaids,” the unnamed critic asked her, “Are you shocked that you actually work in this business at your tremendous size?” After she recovered from her mortification, she said, “I thought, ‘With my tremendous size, I could tackle you so quickly.’” Instead of killing him, she chose to talk about the movie and how much she enjoyed working with Paul Feig. When it was over, the horrified producer apologized told her that they’d never air what the critic said.

But it’s not an issue that’s isolated to one awful interviewer. She noted that while it happens to her all the time, it’s not a problem for men. “Not to be a jerk or single him out, but when John Goodman was heavier, did anybody ever talk about his girth?”

  • If you want to read more of what Melissa said, the February issue of InStyle is available now, and the digital download will be available on January 18th.
